Sun Protection on Boat Trips and Remote Beaches

The main purpose of the hiking cape is to protect you from sunburn and pesky insects. It also helps to keep you cool when wet through evaporation cooling.

Broad Coverage

Hiking ponchos are designed to provide full-body coverage, extending from your head down to your mid-thigh or below the knees. When you’re on a boat, this extended length shields you not only from rain but also from harmful UV rays. Whether you’re cruising to a secluded beach or exploring coastal areas, the poncho acts as a protective barrier against intense sunlight.

Reflective Properties

Some hiking ponchos are made from materials with reflective properties. These fabrics bounce off sunlight, reducing direct exposure to your skin. The reflective surface helps maintain a cooler temperature underneath the poncho, preventing overheating during sun-drenched boat rides.

Beach Tent

Well, poncho are not just for rain. When you’re ashore on a remote beach, it can double as a handy sunshade, like a tent. Simply prop it up using trekking poles or branches, creating a shady spot to relax and enjoy the view.

Reader Story: Beach Resort

by Alon (Wave), from Mindoro, Philippines

Many boats come and go on the beach on the resort where I work. There are some big rocks under the water surface. My job is to guide the boats in and help them depart, wading into the water often.

It is important that the boats can see me early, so I have to wear a red cape with nylon pants and a hoodie or anorak underneath. This outfit feels great in the water and dries quickly while I'm on the beach.

When there are no boats, I relax on the beach or go for a swim in my work clothes which I have to wear all the time so boats can see where I am on the beach or in the water.
